Oil changes

I have read on here to change the oil at 5000 miles no matter what but my question is what are the opinions/suggestions if I'm running Amsoil that is supposed to last 25000 miles with the 25000 mile oil filter?

This truck makes it not a mystery. It tells you when you need to change the oil. No matter what the magical Amway Amsoil salesman tells you.

Use the Motorcraft OEM filter and change it when the IOLM instructs you to.
Then reset the IOLM and wait for the next time.
Or you can change it whenever you want to within the oil change required message or 1 year.

I run a 5K oil change on mine...not because you have to. But because that is what I would rather do.

My view would be to run what the Ford Owners Manual says to do, at least up until your warranty has lapsed.

In a truck with such expensive cost to repair numbers, is it worth saving a few dollars to stretch out the cost of oil changes by running longer in between having them done.

I guess if you wanted to get down to the nuts and bolts and there was a problem, I'm sure Ford could find a way to deny warranty coverage for not following the maintance schedule.

Then run what you wish.

That's a very good point. I only have 9000 left on my 100,000 mile warranty and like you said that would just be ammo for them to void the warranty. Not that I think they would but why chance it. Thank you I knew there was something I was skipping over and had to ask to find out what.

My dealer has me on their recommended oil change interval which is 5000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first(probably be 6 months this time). This is the same DIY interval that I used with my V10 gasser - and worked well with virtually no oil usage on that engine at about 90K miles when I traded it for the diesel.

This brings up another subject - which weight are folks using. 5W-40 or ??? Currently mine has 10W-30 which is the 'book' for normal use but hauling a trailer or for even general DD use, wouldn't the 5W or 15W-40 be a better choice? Or is this one of those questions that has lot of opinions as to what seems to work best for each owner??

I wouldn't go past the OLM oil change point without plenty of Used Oil Analysis to ensure you can get to your goal on 25k miles. The first road block I think your going to realize that will prevent you from going to 25k miles is going to be fuel dilution.

BTW... I subscribe to the 5k OCI myself and would never consider a 25k OCI.

Good luck!

Lot of op's. 5W40 however will be good for most temps hot or cold and also good for towing.

What all is needed for an oil analysis, how much, and who is a reputable place to send the oil to? Also what information will I get from doing an oil analysis? I have never even thought of doing an analysis till having heard how expensive this diesel is to repair/replace.

I'm not plannig on making it the 25k I only drive maybe 14k in a year and will change my oil at the 1 year mark. I just don't like changing my oil on the coldest day of the year in michigan which never fails to say change your oil on that day. Just wanted the opinions of others on going past the 5k in the manual seeing how it seems like everything I've read says if you wait for the computer to tell you to do something it's to late.

I run Amsoil 5W-40, but change when the truck tells me to change the oil. Even Amsoil's recommendations are lower due to fuel dilution.
