hello everyone,
my son has a 2001 ford f150 single cab short bed with the 4.6, at one time someone cut out the cats and replaced them with aftermarket cats. When doing this cat replacement, they didn't have things lined up properly and the flanges are leaking. We are going to replace them system with either a direct replacement aftermarket system or if I could find a highflow two cat system vs the four cat system id go that route or even a catless system.
I'm not able to find anything other than a stock style replacement, any help would be appreciated.
You need to define what you want from the work. Sounds like you only have an exhaust leak that you're trying to fix but everything else works correctly. Why not just keep what you have and fix the alignment problem? You're just trying to fix a leak.

The flanges on the y pipe are bent from someone trying to fix the leak by giving it all the beans.
how would I go about fixing the alignment problem without a welder other than taking it to an exhaust shop, i can get "cheap" replacement cats system for around $250 a muffler shop would probably want something around half that just to repair the hack job that's in there.
if I had a welder I'd try fixing it myself, I had to build the h pipe for my 79 mustang when i put the 4.6 in there and i had way less room so thats not an issue other than not having a welder at my disposal.
that's why I'm in the search for a better flowing system vs a stock replacement for later in life upgrades for the truck. Its only got 115,000 miles so it has plenty of life left in it.

Kind of what the first post implied but clearly stated here. Deleting the converters would flow better, I assume. I'm not sure how "bad" the stock system really is. Seems like an assumption. The aftermarket will always say that their system flows better.
Good luck. It's subjective. Everyone wil have a different opinion.
Having less cats will have less restriction on the system, so it will help pick up a little power which these trucks definitely need, even with the v8 they are kind of dogs compared to what a coyote puts out in a newer f150.
I would just replace the y pipe cat with the cheapest 49 state cat there is out there
They are generally smaller cats that flow air at least as good as the factory cat
Make sure there is no old broken up catalyst material in your muffler from the old cats they had replaced
Look at Ebay # 395143376742 for 225 bucks free shipping (is a 4x4 one)
The 4x4 and 4x2 are different
Good luck
