On my 90 2wd with a 5.0, the y-pipe and cat are all jacked up. The right hand flange for the manifold basically fell apart, the pipes and the cats look like they've been patched a few times (mainly by sticking nails in the holes and welding them. I'm getting a lot of exhaust leaks out of them, i tried patching some of it up today but it was no use. I get the feeling the cats are probably plugged too, seeing how the AIR system is long gone, and performance doesnt seem that great. The rear section of the exhaust after the cat looks good though, it's all stainless steel, looks like a quality job aside from someone welded it right to the rear cat.
I'm looking at the magnaflow y-pipe/cat to replace the front section.
I'd be bolting it up to the stock manifolds (i'm not really looking all that much for performance, i just want a y-pipe section that isnt full of leaks). It's supposed to be direct fit, but the numbers they give for diameters seem kind of odd. anyone know?
I'd probably just ditch the cat that comes with it too, there's no smog testing where i live, and it's mostly a farm truck anyways. So i'd probably just put the y-pipe up, and take it to a muffler shop to hook it up to the rest of the exhaust. I see bassani makes an "off-road" pipe that doesnt come with a cat though, but its about $100 more, and i dont know if it has an 02 sensor in it, plus i read that it requires some kind of adapter for stock use. should i go with the magnaflow or the bassani?
i have the bassani catless y pipe on my brothers 1992 5.0 , it works great and sounds mean, and requires no extra work , has the bung for your o2 sensor and its a direct bolt in application.
and on my truck i have the Jegs brand y pipe , catless aswell. works great and has the o2 bung aswell. was only 200$ also. direct bolt on also.
This is not the first time I have seen any mention of this adapter. Fortunately there is no need for this adapter on the y-pipe for the 5.8L engine, only the 5.0.
If it was me ordering it, I'd order the cat from somewhere else. The place I ordered my rear Magnaflow cat is Performancepeddler.com. Order from that website and use the promo code bestoffer4em on check out. That is the cheapest way, but it might take about a week for their standard delivery. Hope I helped you out on money some.
