Hello all, been lurking here for a few weeks since purchasing a 1992 F150 l6 4x4 reg cab/long bed. Lots of great info here! I picked up a Haynes manual, but it hasn't been much help with my current problem. My cat & y pipe are both badly rusted and need replacing. The muffler and tailpipe have already been replaced by the previous owner. When removing the cat/y pipe I realized the extent of rusting on the the exhaust system "brackets" (not sure if this is the correct term). Since i'll be ordering a new cat & y pipe from Rockauto, i'd also like to order new brackets for the entire exhaust (previous owner did not replace the muffler/tailpipe brackets while doing that job). Im not sure what parts I need to get as the brackets Rockauto sells don't look like the ones on my truck! If you know what I need to properly hang an exhaust or have a FSM i'd really appreciate your input so I don't go ordering the wrong parts. I uploaded a few pictures of the rusted brackets into my gallery. Im also not sure how I'm going to hook up the air pump line to the new cat, so theres also a pic of my removed cat... but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Thanks for your time, Tom
We weren't trying to ignore you.
I'm surprised no one gave input.
I never owned a 300-6 so I can't completely visualize the headpipes going into the first cat.
I know it has dual pipes but the hangers I don't know.
Anyway
If you just buy some plain bent pipe you should be able to build a ypipe fairly cheap yourself if you can weld.
Hangers can be bought and bolted to wherever or hangers on pipe can be as simple as a 3/8 bolt for the rubber isolator to slide onto.
check Magnaflow whose mother company is Carsound which is the largest aftermarket manufacturer of oem replacment cats.
I know they have a catback system for the v8 fords(i have one) and a replacment for the y pipes on those.Thay may just have a setup for an I6.
hey guys thanks for taking the time to respond, my truck only has 1 cat, not sure if this is factory setup or replacement. I already have a new cat and y pipe on order... went with the walker setup that people on this site seem to recommend for the l6, so I'm good on that.
What I'm looking for is the hangers(or whatever you call them) that secure the exhaust system to the frame. My hangers have rusted away. When I search for them on rockauto.com, the pictures look nothing like my rusted parts. Was hoping someone could point me in the direction of what I need, or shoot me a part #. They look like a metal arm attached to a U-bolt clamp but its rusted so badly that I can't be sure. My backup plan is to go over to auto zone and have them match me up a replacement, but I don't like using auto zone.
In those two pics, you're not showing the frame part of the hanger being rusted. Your pics are showing the part that goes on exhaust being rotted off.
Pull that piece out of the rubber and you'll be fine. Go get a piece of 3/8 rod and bend new hangers to weld onto the new exhaust. Then when you're done, weld a washer on end of rod to keep it from sliding out. Or bend a 45 onto the end. I like washers.
Looks like the frame brackets are fine. The rubber bushings are there. The rod sticking out of the rubber is the original arms that were welded to the original pipes. If you buy a true stock replacement pipe it SHOULD come with those pieces on them. All you have to do is remove that rusty bar and install new pipe with bar on it.
Cheapy replacement parts will not be a factory bolt on. Only parts from like Walker will be a true OEM replacement(and use factory hardware).
The tailpipe looks like a factory replacment part. It appears to fit in the stock hanger. That mid pipe is not.
Thanks a bunch! I understand now. Had no idea those metal rod arms were supposed to be welded to the exhaust components. Im finding my truck has been fixed in a "half-***" way in a few other areas as well. I don't have a welder or bender but the walker tail pipe (with rod arms already welded on) is only $25 so Im just gonna replace that. Just gotta find a pipe for between the cat/muffler with an arm welded on and ill be set.
Sorry for my lack of experience & vocabulary, this is my first vehicle that I'm able to work on myself so its new territory for me. I'm finding it very rewarding to do my own work... I replaced a bad starter yesterday and felt like tom hanks in cast away when he made fire!
