I'm doing a filter and gasket change on a 1987 F250 with AOD, when I removed the pan I found this piece rolling around it. Does anyone know what this is or where it goes? Thanks
Thanks Scndsin, I watched a bunch of tear down videos of the AOD and didn't see that piece in any of them. I put it back together and it works so that must be some assembly line plug. Thanks again
That plug fills the dipstick hole when the trans leaves the transmission factory. When the trans is installed in a vehicle the dipstick tube is pushed down into the hole and that plug falls into the pan. Some people put it back in the pan when they have the pan off. I can't imagine why.

That's why we call it the 'Cherry'. Not only does it kinda resemble one, but the transmission is only a virgin once...
Ford, being the bean counters they are, should be saving and reusing those plugs
First one I saw was on a C3 Jatco or C4 from a Maverick or Comet IIRR in the late 70s
Just as easy to pull them up and out as to push them in the pan, but time is money
