I know it’s not good for any motor to sit, but circumstances dictate that has to happen (my family and I will be setting sail in less than a month for a trip from Lake Ontario to Florida), so my question to you is what sorts of things should be done to store an 03 excursion 6.0 for a period of about 9 months? I just changed the oil and and fuel filters and will likely only have about 500 miles on when put away. We just picked this up about a month ago and it has some issues and leaks I’ve been taking care of as they crop up, actually have it down to an AC leak as far as fluids go now. It does need EGR del and oil cooler done, depending on when parts for those arrive I may get to them beforehand or they may just stay in the box and have to await return. I have always had best results keeping rodents out with wintogreen lifesavers, buy the giant bag and spread them everywhere a critter could climb in, keeping a list of where and how many that stays in the vehicle. So far here is my list
before storage:
oil change and filters
fuel filters and add 911 or other stabilizer/antigel
rodentproofing
fully charge and remove batteries (required by storage place)
battery tender if power available
stabilizers for brake, coolant, trans, diffs, differential, power steering?
anything for turbo?
anythibg for injectors?
after storage:
coolant flush
trans flush
power steering and brake fluid replacement
diffs and differential
oil and fuel filters on hand just in case
I’ve parked aircraft, boats, equipment, trucks, cars, bikes, etc all winter, and off season equipment in summer.
Get it good and hot, full tank of fuel (stabilizer if gas), shut it down, pull the batteries and keep them charged. Walk away from it, come time to get it going, check tire pressures, put the batteries back in and carry on.
I run synthetic engine oils. If running conventional, I have had valve sticking issues in the past when stored for long periods.
I like bounce dryer sheets. Never had an issue since using them. I stuff them everywhere, and keep track of where you put them.
I should have mentioned all the fluid swaps are because I do that to any new to me vehicle I get, everything beyond oil and fuel filters is stuff that would be getting done even if this was my DD. Just planning to drive it 2 more weeks and then tackle everything once we’re back on land. It is a 6.0L power stroke, sorry forgot that in initial post. Thanks for the replies!
