Best 6.4 Starter?

I'm on my 3rd 6.4 starter. First was a new one from O'Reilly, tip broke off the solenoid, replaced under warranty with reman. While waiting on the replacement, I bought a new made china unit from Amazon, it failed this week at 4 yrs old. The plastic lever between solenoid and bendix wore through. The reman is installed now and need one for the shelf, just curious what others are using.

For new, the Mahle starter from CNCFab seems to be very good. I’m so dissatisfied with electronics over the counter that I’ve been purchasing OE starters and alternators from salvage yards that are low mileage and that I can confirm is OE.

May want to consider a OEM 6.7PSD starter. The one in my truck is still original at ~12 years and 285k miles.

I went thru something similar to this and went with a factory 6.7 starter with low miles from a wrecking yard. Has not been an issue and spins a lot faster.

I got my 6.4 starter from DB Electrical. Price was good and it's been on the truck for several years with no issues. Spins a lot faster than stock.

I think I am going to go with a new Motorcraft 6.4 starter, I was under the impression Ford was only selling remans, that is not the case. I'll put the reman back on the shelf for a spare.

The O'Reilly reman is stamped FoMoCo so I'm not sure how a person could be sure they were getting OEM from a wrecking yard, unless you had a good relationship with the yard. The latest Superduty in my local yard is 2006.

The majority of reman starters will be FoMoCo cores, hence the logo. The same goes for alternators or, in my world, brake calipers.

When I hunt for salvage parts, I look for them on eBay or Car-Part.com. I look for the OE sticker on the part itself, along with a good rep of the yard, and occasionally, when they show an image of the vehicle, where the part is coming from. With the Ford system, you have to be careful if the part is an assembly-line example, as sometimes the "OE design" today may be a service part, though new. They can be not as stringent in different aspects.

I did the 6.7 DB Electrical starter. No issues yet even though it’s definitely Chinese. I’ve taken it off a few times for other work I was doing and see no signs of wear. So far so good.

I had to disassemble the starters to find the wear. I just hope Ford uses better plastic.
