Yeah that's been my only hesitation is whether it's going to make things difficult for my better half to climb in.
Most I have seen and used in other vehicles make it more difficult as it effectively increases the threshold to get in and out. It also increases likely hood that your leg will rub on the bar getting your clothes dirty. Not good for the wife.
I'm going with sliders with 0 degree angle (flat). 8.5 inches total width...outside edge of slider rail to outside edge of rub rail. Gives you roughly a good 6" wide protruding step since the slider rail will be slightly under the body. I found them at https://hotmetalfab.com/products/cop...ld-it-yourself.
You have to call to change the width to 8.5 inches instead of 6. Good guy and easy to deal with.
Its a DIY kit so you have to weld it up. You have to source your own top plates, which will function as the step platform. I'm going to order them with letters cut out to personalize them along with dimples for grib/aesthetics. Haven't figured out if I am going to cut out my name, excursion, flag, or what yet.
I'm not trying to climb Mt Everest in the big fat Ex. These will add plenty of security from the occasional log, rock, stump, mud rut, door dings, shopping carts, and Karen minivans. Plus will look beefy enough to match the Ex and provide a recovery and jack point.
I changed my mind. Instead of buying a DIY kit i'm building them myself.
I tried to upgrade the main rub rail from .120 thickness to .188 (3/16). They were able to do this but wanted an extra $150 plus additional shipping. That brought the pair of slides from $505 to over $700.
Since I would still have to do the final cuts, welds, and paint I decided to price out the steel at my local yard. Material cost was less than $200. Even if I had the yard do the cuts (that would make the price comparison apples-to-apples), price was about $250.
Besides saving a few bucks, this would give me the chance to do any fancy custom changes.
I own multiple excursions, so the savings would add up and I can use the savings to buy a few cool tools like a nice pipe bender. I'll save this project for the winter and will post pics when I'm done.
