Ok- I put a new shaft on the door window handle and bought a new handle but it's falling off again after tightening the set screw. What hole does the set screw go into to "set" the handle. I remember trying to drill a hole in the old shaft for the set screw but for the life of me what is the set screw supposed to go into? There surely has to be a better way!
I can offer no help as I have a 55 but it appears that the 56 handle design was not a improvement, the 53-55 trucks used a handle splined like a window crank and they are rock solid
Thanks to the "exact reproduction" parts that are being sold, I too had the same problem. I found that the set screw was not set in the door handle far enough back OR the stud for the door handle has the detent too far back. In any case, no matter what I did the handle would come loose and fall off my recently completed frame off complete restoration. I took out the set screw and then used a snap marking tool and inserted it into the set screw opening and marked the position on the door handle shaft. I then found a piece of copper tubing that would fit over the shaft. I then drilled a hold in the tubing and lined it up with the mark on the door handle stud. I then drilled an indent into the stud and reattached the door handle and tightened down the set screw. So far, it has stayed on! The parts suppliers should be more honest about the parts and say that they closely resemble the OE part, but may take anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of days of massaging them to get them to fit!
