Which way are the door latch release levers for a '66 supposed to point? I have been looking at the gallery and I see them pointing every direction. The reason I am asking is that the splines are completely gone on my driver's door and I am going to do as another member suggested and drill the shaft and put a longer screw throught the shaft. Seems like that should work. Has to be better than the mini vise-grip on there, now. Just want to make sure I have the correct orientation before I drill it. The one on the passenger side is pointing straight down in the 6 o'clock direction. I have seen a few that way, but I have seen almost every position imaginable.
What's comfortable to you? That's what matter's.
Seeing how your drilling the spline shaft I doubt that you entering this truck in a number judging show.
So with that said put your door handles as well as your window handles in a position that is comfortable to you.

I'm using the set screw hole and drilling a hole perpendicular to the shaft which will allow a longer set screw to go through the shaft in exactly the same direction that the original screw went. The modification will be completely hidden.
My nieghbor has his positioned at the 1 oclock and that is down right weird feeling. You have to push the handle forward to get out. I like them at the 5 or 5:30 personally.
I agree with the 5 o'clock position as cs65 describes. That's how they were in a 64 F100 I owned in 1979 and that's how they are on 65 F100 I recently obatined. My friend had a 64 with them mounted upside down (imo) like the 1 o'clock position, and it was just wrong, to me.
I read a couple of days ago the reasoning behind the handles positioning...its safety...so you gotta pull vs push to get out...and we all know how the kids like to push on things.....
