Trans build help
I'm building a supercharge 408 and I elected to go through my E4OD first. I spent about 6 months reading, watching videos, gathering parts, and eventually I found a cheap core to build. I spent several weeks building the transmission. I have access to a lathe and what not and I was able to shove more clutches in every clutch pack. I put in 2 steel 6 planet gearsets and a steel 4 planet gearset. Sent the converter to the local builder [who I sublet a lot of work to] and got it built to accept the power I think I will have.
If you are looking for something quick, then you'll probably have to buy one already built. If you have no clue about transmissions, you might want to have someone build it. If you have no clue but have time and want to go on a huge adventure you will always remember, then build it up yourself. Even if you have no clue, there are plenty of videos that will help you out. The transmission bench has a series but for me, that was one of the most boring series I've ever watched. Many people like them, but it's way too slow and not very informative when it comes to 'Why'. I like Marshall Sander's videos. Again, I spent about 6 months reading and watching before I even elected to buy a core to rebuild. Spent months finding parts on eBay.

My core was a 95 so many of the updates were done and many of the core parts were trashed. I did use a billet input shaft. No other billet parts were used. That stuff is too much for my budget and I am not racing or planning on doing any 1/4 miles times with my 5th wheel. Rebuilt is often used too loosely but as far as I am concerned, it was rebuilt. New bushings everywhere.
I used Sonnex and Tugger kits. When I got done, I elected to get rid of the Tugger accumulator portion of their shift kit. I felt it was way too extreme [firm] for what I was looking for. Right now, I got a stock 351w with a Kenne-Bell. When I put in the Sonnex accumulator springs, I felt the shift was more to my liking. When I get the 408 engine project done, I might change my thought about shifting, but I doubt it. I also have a Tweecer so I am able to get the shift/converter timing more to what I want. Still playing with that.
Last couple weeks, I put in a 6.0 transmission cooler and got rid of the stock aux cooler. I also changed out the lines to 3/8th vs the 5/16th. I swapped the solid front bumper to the diesel/later model bumper with the additional holes. I am building shrouding so the air has nowhere else to go but through all the coolers.
