First post here so am not sure where to place this one. I have seen two different answers for how the tach is powered in my 88 f150-cable/electronic. Either way when I test drove it, it was no registering and I heard a whirring sound from behind the dash, like a cable was spinning and hitting something. Anyhow what is the best way to fis this if it is electronic? If it is cable driven I will just have to hook whatever end came out.
Thank you. Now to determine how hard it is to pull the dash to check things out.
Before you do that, check fuse #18.
Also, check for corrosion the connections of the dark green with yellow stripe wires at your ignition coil.
Also, check grounds under the dash and behind the kick panel by the emergency brake pedal.
On your driver's side fender, under the hood, there should be a connector with 2 or 3 wires, where the dark green with yellow stripe wires branch to the tachometer and the ECM. You could check that connector for corrosion also.
The green dot is the connector with the two dark green/yellow stripe wires at the ignition coil.
The red dot is the plastic housing at the base of the ignition coil where the connector plugs in.
