i have an 84 ford bronco full size xlt with a 351w. i was on a road trip and the tach started droping off and then spiking very quickly. it had no power when it droped. it died several times, i found that if i sat and waited for 15 min before touching it again it would start and drive for another 30 min and do the whole thing over again. i installed new plugs and wires the day before the trip and it has never acted this way before. i stoped at an auto zone and got a control module thing that is attached to the front of the distributor, but this did not help. also it has an edelbrock intake, and a motorcraft 2bbl. carb. It wll run fine for a few minutes then the tach will drop to zero followed by a return to high rpm and then drop back instantly and then back up again.please help
all the wires under my hood look like crap on a stick, they are burnt, melted, cracked, not connected i want to get rid of as much if them as i can, how do i check the coil and what am i looking for with the wires attached to it?
I'm not sure all what a 1984 has but check that the wires are connected and not frayed, burnt, or damamged. I have heard of the cable from the battery to the solenoid getting warm and the vehicle will shut off and then start again after 30 min. I was concerned about the coil because the tach wire runs to the negitive side of the coil so with tach issues I thought the coil might be a problem. Something could be a ignition module if they still have them on the 1984 but like i said i don't know what they all have or don't have.
ok i will try that, i am heading up to the auto zone tomorow after i talk to my gear head buddies from high school to see what they think. i checked all the wires and they all look like crap, there is no way to tell which ones are causing the prob cause they all look so bad.
well, after i spent hours on the net searching data bases for the smallest bit of info, and re-reading my haynes manual, i wanted to shoot the idiot that owned my vehicle before me. wires every where that lead to nothing, a computer that was never an option for my year model and of all things a m.a.p. sensor. according to the manual i have the tfi system and the eec-iv powertrain control module and some other neat techno crap. what does all that mean? it means that none of it actually does a damn thing on my rig because it has an after market intake and carb. well i replaced my cap and rotor, reset the timing and wallah, the trick she is done.
glad to hear u got it fixed but keep an eye on that tfi cause they are not the most reliable part. Some models had recalls on them. And the tfi module requires a special tool to take it off as well.
its insane, this rig has more bottom shelf ford design stuff than i deserve, i am going to scrap the entire ignition system in my bronco and put in msd all the way and see how it runs then.
yeah, but i love it, that bronco was born the same year as me, and i have never got it stuck, even when i tried. msd it pretty expensive but my baby is worth every penny. not to mention i will get rid of the crap that is in there right now! i will gladly pay that much to get rid of the hassle this oem stuff is giving me
TFI needs a $9 little angle ratchet wrench specifically for the ford dist.
TFI was subject of a hugh class action suit, many law suits. They were going to try to get Ford to recall everything with a TFI. It settled and you could get your mone for a replacement or a free replacement from Ford. Of course, I lost my a darnr receipt. ($49)
Glad I wasn't on a rr track or interstate when mine died with the whole fam damly in the van.
As far as the mess under the hood on your Bronco, it sounds like you are on the right track and that anything will be an improvement. Good luck.
thanks i appriciate all the support i get on here, if you can find some info on that recall thing pass it along for me will ya?
I bet you are in a bigger hurry now to get rid of your tfi system! I didn't know how big the deal was but the tfi is more or less junk. And it takes only one time on the tracks with a train coming.
