Dead OEM Tachometer

1993 5.8 Eddie Bauer - Stock

The factory in dash Tach has not worked since I have owned this truck. I have checked the connection off of the negative side of the ignition module (2 wires on the same connector that are tan with a yellow chaser). I replaced the ignition module several months ago during a tune-up. Tach did not work before or afterward.

Is there a ground somewhere that I need to check? Please tell me that it is not behind the dash! That is a royal PITA.

Thanks to everyone for the responses in the past for other issues that I have had.

Tim

I chased an intermittent dying problem that might be relevent here. The negative battery cable has a wire going to the fender. Be sure the ground stud is not turning in the fender making a bad ground. Be sure the two other wires going there are also good. The reason I say this might be relevent is when it died at highway speed the tach would slam to zero even though the transmission was still turning the engine.

b4hntn,
The ground wires on the passenger side fender are tight, I even took it off and cleaned it up, but no dice.

Truck runs awesome, but still a dead tach. Is there any way to check the tach?

And the tach moves a small amount during cranking, but when the engine catches and I let go of the key, it falls to 0.

Tim, go through everything else in the truck and see if anything else is down as well. I have chased numerous problems (gremlins) with mine...if you know how to use an o-scope you could get on the distributor and chase it that way..have you run the codes on it? Good to hear others have had grounding problems..I would suspect the tach itself. it is not a big deal to replace as the cluster is modular....You could have it out in 30min or so..check the plug in the cluster...Connector #250...w/pk is the supply for the tach..Bk/Yis the tach ground..the r/pk is spliced to the the wires you spoke of in your email...dash isn't too tough a job just a bunch of screws..suggest using torx bit instead of socket....4screws in dash and about 6 on cluster...tach will pop out after clear cover is removed....ck connector on right hand side of cluster...for these wires I mentioned....CaptG...'95 border patrol..190k+...
