I was wondering what your guys thoughts are on using an engine lift plate on a 390 with tranny included to place it back in with an aluminum holly intake. It just seems to me that’s a lot weight on those small bolts/threads.
If it was me just to be safe . I'd take the intake off and then put the engine/trans. in. Those threads are gonna be holding a lot until they don't. Just my 2 cents.
You don’t need to take off anything to stab the engine into place. I agree about using the aluminum intake carb mount. When I did my 428 with PI intake, I used two L shaped lift hooks and installed them on two intake to block bolts opposed to each other at opposite ends. No problem.
The lift plate will hold it, if you use G8 bolts. That said with the trans on it you will have a difficult time getting it in because you cannot control the angle of the dangle.
Get one of these and connect it to the heads. It will make your life a lot easier and safer. 2 Ton Capacity Load Leveler (harborfreight.com)
Agreed, the Al intake would worry me. And I'm not worried about the grade 8 or grade 5 studs. It's the aluminum threads it is threaded into. Use the harbor freight leveler for ultimate control. I just use a chain into the heads.

Interesting! Hook / Bolt the chain to where exactly? Would you mind sharing a picture?
