Engine lift plate?

I have searched and can't find anything on this so if I missed something I apologize in advance, I am wondering about the engine lift plate that mounts on intake in place of carburetor. Do yall use and trust it?
Is it okay to use it aluminum intake?
Can u lift motor and tranny together?
Also if u can lift with aluminium intake are there any special
kind of bolt to use for aluminum threads or normal grade 8?

I know that lots of people use them, I have too. But now that I,m older I don,t really want to put my life in the hands of 4 ;1/4" bolts. As for aluminum intake i don,t know if i would do that either.JMO.

I never trusted them on 4 1/4 inch bolts.I feel safer with a chain and a 3/8 bolt in the head.

Red face Careful

So, I lifted my FE out, up and over the RAD support and thought it was just super..... I later found out that 2 of the threaded intake holes used to bolt down the carb and the lift plate were 90% shot and later caused me a vacuum leak.... Morale of the story, if your going to use a carb plate, double check your 4 holes and if needed heli coil them or re-thread.... I think God had pitty on my soul and kept my engine from falling on my feet Heres a pic, ignore the red arrow, that was for a different posters question.....

FE out

These look nice, better than the long bar and screw.

I'd have no problem using it as long as the manifold threads were good. A grade 2 1/4-20 has a tensile over 1000lbs, what's the most each bolt will see 200-250lbs? I'd still get grade 5 and watch the torque. Use studs like shown to distribute the clamping force.

If my memory serves me correctly, which some times it doesn't being this old. All the carb mounting bolts or studs were 5/16 inch diameter?

You could be right old man, but don't they have a 7/16 nut instead of 1/2? I think that's why I thought 1/4.

I have used the manifold plates for SB and BB. And yes, I believe studs are 5/16" diameter. With aluminum manifold I like to make sure the bolt goes to the bottom of the manifold threads and use a stop nut if needed to get the plate snug to the manifold. Full thread engagement. I snug the bolts or stop nuts up but not high torque in this application.

You may be right, I know the aftermarket studs use the 1/2 nuts. Been a long long time since I pulled a factory carb, The nuts could have been 7/16.

many years ago one of the car magazines put it to a test. if I recall correctly the steel lifting plate bent long before the studs or aluminum manifold gave out.

I am not a fan of carb lifting plates especially with a trans connected. Using head bolts makes me feel better.

Or... I would of attached the pic in my other post, but the new FTE changes are preventing me from doing that.
