2017 Tailgate dampening

On my 2017 the tailgate just drops, so I was gifted the "TAILGATE VISCOUS DAMPENING CARTRIDGE" kit:
https://accessories.ford.com/super-d...ng-cartridge-1

The problem I am having is that the ball screw (lack of better term for item "C"), where I can see it should mount on the truck under the bumper, the hole is not threaded.
The part from the instructions:

The only place I can see that has a hole for the bolt but there are no threads?

So is this the correct location or am I missing something. I can see the bolt is tapered but it does not look like it's self tapping. I can't tell what thread size this is to even tap the hole.

Thanks for any input.

That's it, run it in and torque to spec......remember your tapping into aluminum.

I have seen install videos where others have mentioned it making threads as you screw it in. They all seem to be able to start it by hand and then run it the rest of the way with a tool. Your photo looks to be showing the opposite side of where that part screws into. I'm guessing you know that but it was easier for the photo.

I just put one in my 2019, it will thread in, it just starts out tough. I went in from the back to get the threads and then removed and reinstalled the correct way.

Thanks, I was about to ask if that was doable.

I was gifted one for Christmas, the Ford part and after installing, it doesn't seem to be of much help, doesn't allow it down like it did on my 17 F150...... The strut/damper has to be bad. Anyone know of a aftermarket one from a auto parts store that is a suitable replacement? I can't seem to find just the strut.

I installed one of these on my F-250 6 years ago and it's still going strong.

Just like a lot of other Ford parts and accessories, I doubt they sell any one part of that kit separately. Being that it was gifted to you I take it is why you can't warranty it?

A little lube on the bolt threads will make the job easier.

Correct, my SIL ordered it off Amazon, so probably zero chance of warranty.

Take the old one to your local auto parts store. They can match up the size with what they have in stock.

Auto parts stores all carry the regular lift supports. These are a traction gas/ tension gas spring.
