to start off with this this is on my 94 F150 5.8 E4OD 4x4. I have noticed the past couple months the transmission seems to be slipping in OD when cold. This problem seems to be intermittent with no apparent pattern besides the fact it usually does it when the truck is still getting up to temp. If I had to guess it's maybe done this to me half a dozen times but no more than that. I wasn't having much luck online finding anybody with this type of issue. And yes, I am sure it is not kicking itself out of gear and the tranny doesn't seem to be getting hot. Since I think it isn't happening enough to chase after right away I will keep an eye on it and see if I can get a video of what exactly it does once I catch it again.
I have checked for codes and nothing has come up on the KOEO or KOER test. The filter and fluid was replaced roughly 3,000 miles ago and the fluid seems to be fine right now with no dark color to the fluid or running low. I have put conditioner in before the fluid change but I will be soon because of this.
If I could get some things to watch for or maybe some suspects that could cause this issue it would be much appreciated by me. Once again sorry for the mild symptoms with little to nothing to work with but if the problem gets worse I will report back to y'all here. Thank you for your time.
1. I am aware of that yes, but it happens even after 5 minutes
2. When driving lets say 40 mph it usually goes into OD when cruising at that speed. I know it's in OD but it doesn't feel tight like it usually does and the rpms move around when I step on the gas. On a normal day it feels tight and the rpms do not move around until I start gaining speed.
As stated before this problem is intermittent with no pattern but if it was going to do it it would be while it's still getting to temp. Today when it did it the one time it was half way between cold and where it usually likes to sit when up to temp.
This sounds like the torque converter isn't locking. You've described perfectly the difference between an unlocked and a locked torque converter.
I think this trans is working as designed. There is nothing wrong.
So it's normal it wasn't wanting to lock while warming up? I don't know a lot about these things so maybe I am worrying about nothing but if I could confirm this then I'll keep running it I suppose.
I read some more so I understand better and makes sense now. Sorry, when it comes to engine I can get the job done with time but transmissions I have absolutely no idea on, I know they make the vehicle move and that's about it lol. Thanks for the help!
I agree. There's also a timer that has to do with running time temperature is reached as to when the TQ locks.
I find if I drive from cold, but the temp isn't up, and stop for gas, then go, it doesn't lock for a while later(5 minutes).
I think there is a timer that is stored in KAM as to when the running temp time is reached, and running time are the same it locks.

Yes, that is normal. It keeps the converter unlocked cold to help warm the trans faster.
