Depends on how much time, money, and effort you want to put into it, but in my opinion, I wouldn't do it without a donor/parts truck, as that way you'll have everything needed (bolts, brackets, pump, steering gear, etc). The pump may not work, the hoses may leak, and the gear may be loose/worn-out, but at least you'll have something to start with.
Piecing something together? Not for me. Life's too short.
I have a column and steering box from a 72 f250 I'd part with as well as the ps bracket. Unfortunately the pump and hoses were gone when I pulled them. The gear box as 60k on it (was a camper). I'm swapping the 72 column into my 71 as it's tight and my 71 is little worn. it would be a great start to the conversion.
If you can find a donor, I'd recommend going that route. I pieced things together and ended up paying WAY more than I should've. I got burnt and was sold the wrong pump, bracket, and column. It's on me, I should've done more research, but the sounded like he knew what he was talking about, so I trusted him. My mistake.
In the end, I was able to get steering box, had my original column shortened, went with a more modern pump and a bracket off of Amazon, and new hoses all around. I've a 302 though, so parts were somewhat easier to find, but still had to cough up the money for it.
I regret going down the path I went, but don't regret the outcome. I live in Los Angeles and my rig has 31x10.5s, so power steering is practically a must.
