My mechanic has an older Ford truck I am thinking he said it was a 76, anyway it has a fresh 360(well it was now it's been sitting for no tellng how long). It looks to be in pretty decent shape, and I would like to take it off his hands, but he doesn't really want me to, because it has no Power Steering, what is the easiest, cheap, and most reliable way to make this truck have power steering? I think if I got him the parts to do it he would probably only charge me for the labor of doing the swap and just give me the truck, but if not it's still going to be less than $500 for the truck, I really like the truck because it's a 4 speed 4x4 with an FE engine. How much does a job of this magnitude usually cost?
You're going to have to locate / purchase a new steering gear box for power steering (in good or rebuilt condition), hoses, belt, pump and pump cooler for that specific engine. I'm not sure if you will need to add an idler pulley or not for that engine. Anyone else know?
maybe it just needs a pump or something. sometimes the hoses go bad or the gear box starts to leak. could be cheap and easy could not, depending on what no p/s means.
I am pretty sure it means it was never equipped with power steering from the factory. So is there a way to make the manual steering perform close to P/S? I have driven a Ford Truck without P/S of the same vintage with a 390, and you sure needed to know where you were going to park ahead of time, because it was a bear at slow speeds, but I was told by the owner you could steer with one hand once you get up to speed.
