I have a 1987 F250 4x4 that is undergoing restoration. It came factory with a 351w (carb) 4v. and the automatic C6 trans. Upon engine teardown we discovered the block was bad (mulitple cracks when the rod came apart). Since I need to source a new block and a new transmission (metal in fluid), I was wanting to convert it over to a 460 motor.
My question is, will the 460 motor mounts bolt to the frame rails without mods? Also will the 460 C6 trans bolt up to the factory crossmembers without mods? Basically I'm trying to figure out what all else I will need other than the different trans?
You will need to put the 460 motor mount perches on your frame. The trans will bolt to the crossmember OK. Does the 460 have an oil cooler mounted to the block where the oil filter goes? Did your 351W?
Thanks. I haven’t sourced the 460 block yet, I wanted to investigate if it would work first. No my 351 did not have an oil cooler. Looks like a 460 it is.
The later 460s had a water-to-oil cooler which was mounted on the side of the block where the oil filter goes. The frame crossmember under the motor was chamfered to make room. You may have to run an external oil filter (like I am) if your frame is not already chamfered. You could also cut out the hole in the frame where the oil filter resides on your 351W, making it big enuf to fit the oil filter directly to the 460 block.
