351 to 460 engine swap

hello all

so I have a 1985 f150 with a smog 351w. Also had plans to build a big block foxbody mustang. Looks like the mustang might need to go and since my 351w is a rolling oil change I was thinking of swapping the 460 into the f150. I have a 2wd auto to match the 460. The truck is 4x4. Can the transfer case be swapped onto the 460 trans? Both transmissions are c6 I believe. So I'm wondering how involved and what would have to be done to do this swap if I decide to do it. Will it bolt right up with new mounts? Is the supposed 500+ HP of the 460 too much for the truck? Any info helps thanks

Pat

Also... it's a carb smog 351 to a carb built 500 HP 460. The C6 trans I got with the 460 has a manual valve body. Engine and trans were originally supposedly built for a sand rail drag racer. I really just want to know what parts I would need and what would need to be changed out if I do go through with this.

truck has dual fuel tanks with mechanical pump on engine. If I put a mechanical pump on the 460 will that work fine?

For the motor mounts. Is it just a matter of changing out mounts or would I need to change out the mounting bracket / k member. not sure if it's called mounting perch in trucks. Transmission mounts?

Ive read that to swap a 2wd C6 to a 4wd C6 involves the whole trans to be pulled apart. Obviously I would have to pay the trans guy to do that... like I said the 2wd C6 Is what I got with the 460 so I don't want to go looking through a junkyard for an already assembled 4wd trans that may slip or not.

The 351 uses a Mallory hygiene ignition system so I'd just buy a Mallory distributor for my 460 that goes along with that system.

So im wondering. Mounting the engine and trans, drive shaft lengths, fuel pumps, radiator, things I can't think of. What needs to be changed and what can stay.

I can find costs on my own. I just would like to know facts on parts please. Thanks

I have a page on my web site that discusses engine swaps: Engine Swaps - ???Gary's Garagemahal

But, it doesn't discuss 2wd and 4wd. The transmission is either built as a 2wd or 4wd unit with different tailshafts and tailshaft housings. And, since the tranny has to be torn down pretty much completely to change those items you are better off getting the proper tranny.

My .02 on this - If the 460 was built for a sand drag rail the cam "maybe" to big for use on the street. Do you have the cam specs and maybe we can tell if it would need to be swapped out for a smaller more street friendly one.
If compression is too high the motor may not like a smaller cam so look into that too.

As for the tranys the manual valve body would not be street friendly unless you only drive it on weekends and even then?
Also if you were to use it what shifter would you use? Forget using the one on the column, where would you mount an after market one? I would also guess the valve body was used because the motor does not have vacuum to let the trany shift right. It may also have a reverse valve body and that takes a different after market shifter.

Because of the cam in the motor is the converter a high stall one? They build a lot of heat, heat kills auto tranys, just a FYI. Smaller cam would not need a high stall converter.

Now between the 2 C6 you have you could get 1 to work with the 460.
Me I would take the 460 case and any HD parts that are inside it I could use with the 351 valve body (add shift kit), rear out put shaft for the 4x4 and call it done.

I did just the other way around for my AMC drag car - took a 4x4 trany and rebuilt it for 4x2 as the trany case only comes in a 4x4 for AMC.

The motor frame & motor mounts etc are on Gary's site for that side of things.

I have a transmission guy and was hoping he would be able to tell me what I got with that and build what I need out of the two.

Could the shift linkage be swapped around on the trans? I was thinking if I did keep the manual valve body I would swap the linkage around making 3 into 1 and up from there so instead of N 3 2 1 be N 1 2 3. If that would work. Then I could keep the column shift I think.

Also thinking maybe just for now not bother with swapping the transfer case and make the truck rear wheel drive only and then maybe swapping later if I wanted to. Figure just remove the forward drive shaft and put then engine and trans in.
