Catted headers 6.2L

Hey all just curious, has anyone did a catted header install in their 6.2L’s? Wanting to learn more about performance changes, idling tone, and just if it’s overall more worth it to just do new exhaust or do the headers, or even both. Any input would be great, or even if somone got a video or sound of the truck with headers. More specifically I was looking at the stainless works system, they have videos out but I’d rather get an opinion from a consumer and actually driving. Thanks again

What's the truck configuration?

They sound spectacular, and depending on your trucks configuration (weight), they should save you some downshifting. Plan on a cat back system with muffler, unless you like it loud. There are a lot of youtube videos made by the header suppliers on youtube, and they are well done, so I'd start there.

Plan on a tune, and it will make for a very crispy part throttle setup. If you can stay disciplined enough to drive for mpg for an entire tank, mpg should improve noticeably....driving to hear it, you'll lose mpg. Just things to consider.

the truck is a 13’ lariat crew cab short bed. 4x4, 37 axel code (3.73) gears? 6.2L.

there is only 1 company that makes headers for the 6.2 super duty, stainless works so that would be your only option. I have a set on my truck. they have gone up in price a lot since I got mine. With a dyno tune on 93 I gained 61whp and 40wtq over the 5star 93 performance tune I had. i think they were worth it, i do get some drone now while driving and towing. it also took me a little to get used to being able to hear the pulses of the exhaust more over the stock manifolds. thought i had a leak for awhile. but ive had them for 3-4 years through PA winters with no issues. my ac drain does drip onto the passenger side collector though.

That's impressive. My motto for the 6.2's I've had, is that if I am ever blessed with a reason to remove the manifolds, I'd put the stainless works in their place. 6.2's just like to run though, so I haven't been faced with the scenario yet where I'm all in there. I suppose I'd get a set if I knew that I'd be keeping one for a long time, for the mpg potential.

thanks for your input I appreciate it, did you do the install yourself or did you have a shop do it? I’m just wondering if itd be more worth it to do the headers, or just do their exhaust kit. Stainless works seems to have the catted headers and exhaust sold separately. They have a video on YouTube comparing stock exhaust,to stainless works exhaust to factory manifolds, and the full catted headers+ exhaust. I am also wondering about the longevity, has yours started to rust or how are they holding up? As far as the tune, did you get a tuner? Thanks

It's a relatively easy install to do in a garage, or driveway with good weather, assuming the manifold bolts come out without issue. I don't know if pulling engine mounts to gain access is required, but I don't think so by looking at mine.

i had a shop do it. ended up having 2 or 3 studs break. my headers are not rusting. they have definitely changed colors but i dont see any rust when doing other maintenance. i had the shop that did the install do the tune since 5 star said they would not do anything if i got CEL, which i did end up getting P0420 and P0430 codes.

do you happen to remeber roughly how much it cost for the install, and did the codes pop up after you started it first the first time post install it was it a bit down the road? I’m looking into some tuners as swell as a few shops to do it, any recommendations on a tuner? I’ve read about a few out there. I definitely want to do the headers tho, my stock manifolds are fine, so I’ve been thinking how bad could it be to get the upgrade exhaust now and then do the catted headers later or maybe just say screw it do it all. Did you do the full system? Or just headers to what you had for exhaust? Thanks again

Tuner choices

I’ve heard of the Diablosport trinity tuner, the accel tuner, and a few others? What are you all running? I don’t tow heavy often and most commonly will jsut be hauling lots of tools or sheetmetal/ pipe loads for regular work driving. I pretty much am looking for best and most cost effective option. As I’ve been saving most of my money for a trailer of my own and new suspension/ bigger wheels and all

the header job was about 600 installed but i did have 2 or 3 busted studs. the codes popped after a little bit of driving. my truck was locally tuned on a dyno by the same shop that did the install. my full system is the long tubes to a magnaflow catback system. After the y pipe on the headers i have an electric cutout that i sometimes use.
i have no problems pulling my 34ft 10k travel trailer. i do have 37s and 4.88 gears though as well.

That’s not too bad for the install. Sounds like nice set up for exhaust. Dumb question what’s the electric cutout do? Also do you have a link to that Magnaflow catback set up? Bigger wheels and tires is down the road for me but was probably planning on 35 by 12’s. Do you think that a dyno tune is far better than a tuner?
