Got some header questions for my '58 F100 w/ 272...
Is this the stock setup? If so I've never seen anything like it, granted I never looked at these trucks too closely before I owned one. The driver's side header outlet is on the top, goes over to the passenger side header which dumps out the bottom? Mine also has a 1/2" chunk of steel acting as a spacer on the passenger side, as well as a hose clamp in the middle of the crossover tube.
Is this as insanely restrictive as it seems? What do you guys recommend for aftermarket (traditional) headers so I can run a true dual exhaust?
The clamp is not needed and the 1/2" chunk of steel is taking the place of a stock part. Yes, it is as restrictive as it looks.
You can run rams horns or headers. Either will be a giant leap from what you have. Headers are the absolute best. Ramshorns can be had from John Mummert, Speedway Motors, and originals can be found. Headers can be found at Red's headers, Sanderson Headers, Patriot Exhaust, Speedway Motors and more, I'm sure.
You will need truck headers. Most truck headers should fit. In regard to the ramshorns, the repros are only for the Ford but if you look for originals, there were some for the Lincoln Y Block as well. The best way to distinguish them is the bolt pattern. The Ford is in a straight line. The Lincoln is a zig-zag.
A header manufacturer I forgot is Stan's Headers.
The 390 headers will not fit. If you can weld, Chevy headers can be modified to work pretty easily but you're on your own there as to finding some that fit. Do not use Chevy tri-Y headers. They'll get you down the road, but they are not set up correctly for the Y's firing order and you will not get the full bennefit of a tri-Y design. If you don't know what that is, google it.
