Headers?
I was wondering which headers would be good for me, Ihave an 84 bronco with a rebuilt 31W. It has a mild cam, but nothing too crazy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

ceramic coated Dynomax headers, they're like $200, and your underhood temps will be amazingly low, and you'll pick up a good bit of performance, fuel milage, and actually lower your emissions at the same time.

I used Motorsports shorties. They have a good flange thickness to prevent warpage, and they're stainless. The main problem with them is the usual with headers, you need to retorque the bolts on occasion to prevent the gasket from leaking. The headers are direct bolt-on replacements.
I don't know how ceramic coated headers would reduce emmissions on your engine. The NOx, and CO are created from the combustion process at idle and part throttle. I do believe the underhood temp reduction claim.
Also, don't expect giant gains in performance from headers. They do not increase horsepower and torque, they will reduce exhaust system losses. You may feel the improvement, but don't be disappointed.

OK how this works is it keep the heat in the pipes which help burn more gasses on it's way to the cats. which in turn will give you a cleaner reading at the tailpipe.

Those ceramic coated headers are awesome and it does reduce your underhood temps dramatically. You can darn near grab hold of one of them headers and not get burned. Like Shazam and TorqueKing said it will help with emissions and opening up the exhaust with a good set of headers, plus decent pipe the rest of the way back will free up substantial ponies for a good seat of the pants difference....and it will sound sooooo sweet..

The sound will most greatly depend on what you put after them, but I promise you it'll be louder, especially if you just don't put anything behind them.
Your neighbors will hate you for it, but it's worth doing once in a lifetime.

call Jeg's or Summit, I like Jeg's because their tech support is open 24 hours, they can tell you if they have them in stock. Their number is 1-800-345-4545. Oops! did I just spit that out off the top of my head? I've never ordered from them before (haha)! Anyway, give them a call at 4:00 this morning, they'll be there. The real reason why I prefer Jeg's is due to the amazing kindness of the Coughlin brothers. I have toured Jeg Jr's entire trailor at an NHRA event, he was so impressed that I was a fan of his. Give 'em a call! TK

Dyno tests have shown that shorty or tri-y headers offer little, if any performance improvement over a stock exhaust manifold. Most people who install them feel a 'seat of the pants' improvement because in most cases the installation has included a less restrictive exhaust system behind the headers and a different sound.
If you're after tangible performance increases, use full-tube headers that have at least 3-4 feet of length to aid in scavaging gasses from the exhaust ports. They allow the exhaust 'pulse' to get a running start before the next one hits it.

>What do yo uguys think about the Headmen Elite Headers? I
>have been thinking about getting those for my 302.
Couldnt be more pleased with them. I have a set on my 351W in an 85 F150 4x4. Fit couldn't be better, easy to install, and they look awesome. Mine are jet hot coated (I think all the elite's are). The only installation issue I ran into was having to drop the front driveshaft to hook the driver's side up.

I recently added Mac equal length "shorty" headers. These were the only equal length headers with OEM fit & fittings I could find. From back in the day I know equal lentgh are better than shorties that are not equal length. No shorty works as well as full headers, however.
The Mac headers went on pretty easy, I wish they were ceramic coated, came with a good quality gasket and I used locktite on the bols... so far no leakage.
These sound and perform awesome with the Gison catback system. I'm finding with these bolt on mods, that everything is incremental: the chip gives a little, the catback & headers some, low temp thermostat... now with what I've done my truck is very noticablly quicker... and man does it sound sweet when you roll on the accelerater!! A whole lot more fun to drive.
