Hey everyone,
looking for the install/removal tool for the copper colored bushing in the rear tail housing of a borg Warner 1356 transfer case. Haynes manual doesn’t specify a specific tool for this job. This is for the slip yoke style transfer case. Let me know if anyone’s done this job before, tips and tricks. Thanks!
I just did mine last week. Used a 1 1/2" socket to remove and a trimmed down piece of wood to install. Didn't get any damage on the bushing and everything went together smoothly.
I might have a few sockets that big in metric, I’ll have to size it all up when I take it apart. Do you remember which brand socket it was? 1/2” drive? Impact socket or chrome socket… etcetra
thanks!
Ford will show you a special tool in the service manual
Us techs just use a socket that fits
Some of us (like me) have a bushing / bearing race driver kit with all the sizes
You will find that on bushings like the one you are tackling have no exact right size driver in the kit
Hence the Ford special tool
You will need to find or buy a socket set or a chunk of metal you can turn into a special tool on a lathe
I have one I made years ago for king pin bushings
Go socket shopping and take the new bushing with you
You may need to modify / grind down or otherwise ruin a socket to get the job done
That is a cost of doing business as a mechanic
A mechanic is going to charge you 70 bucks to install that bushing for you and 35 of that will be for a socket he will ruin maybe
Hey guys, just a quick update. I went ahead and removed that bushing, was real careful with a Sawzall and it came out nice and easy. Installed the new one with a press and a flat piece of steel between the press and new bushing. Install was a breeze, haynes manual says the bushing should sit flush which I did.
