Ford 361FT replacement options

I just bought a 67' Ford 700 dump truck with a 361FT engine that a rod went through the block. Surprisingly it does have air brakes too. I've looked over several forums and some say that FE engines will swap out if you drill the holes for motor mounts, some say they'll bolt right up and some say they won't swap because of motor mount placement. I've seen where some folks have said that if you was to swap say a 390 in place of the 361 that it wouldn't hold up to the load a 361 can withstand at least not for very long. So I am looking for options as to what I can replace this engine with and preferably not have fab work or work arounds. I've read some about 428's vs 390's and 391's and would seem that motor would have more HP and torque and possibly bolt up not sure. A 361 or 391 is not easy to come by at least where I'm at anyway. Seems like a lot of farmers run them till they quit then use the truck for parts or just sell the truck. I've looked at a couple scrap yards and that's a waste of time. So, is there any other options like finding a 390 and using that block and building a good motor between the 361 I have and a 390 I could likely find fairly easily?

Welcome to FTE!
You need to start a thread over in this forum, everyone here just has baby trucks. Large Truck - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums (ford-trucks.com) And you need to put your location in your profile so if someone has parts, they can be helpful. There are some differences between FT's and FE's that those guys will know.

Aother FT is the easiest answer. Nothing with the FT or FE is inexpensive anymore.

Motor mounts for the FT are on the front cover, a cast or steel item made to fit the larger crank snout of the FE. The single point front mount works off the cover. The rear mounts are on the bell housing.

So, you can use an FE block with all the FT heads, front engine items, intake etc. You might have get the distributor driven oil pump shaft passage area machined to fit the FT distributor.

The FT block does have a threaded hole for air compressor oil return. Seems like something that could be done easily.

If your 361 crankshaft can be saved, and all the other FT parts--front cover, bell, heads/manifolds are good, then you can convert an FE to truck duty.

Pistons are different in the FT and they are made with lower compression as part of making them live under full throttle and heavy loads.

Car engines aren't going to like that and a high compression car engine like a 428 would have a short but exciting and expensive life working in a medium truck.

Any FE block can be converted to a FT block by machining the distributor pilot hole for the larger FT oil pump drive, for air compressors the oil drain back hole must be drilled and tapped for a pipe thread fitting, that oil return location is cast into the FE blocks
You must have an FT crank, my preference would be to go with the longer 391 stroke for more torque, you’ll need 391 rods which are the same as any common 390/428 FE rod
You can use your 361 heads, intake, front timing cover and external components to build a 391

All this is said provided you can not find a running 361/391 FT engine
