So long story short I blew up my 360 and I'm looking for a long block to drop in. My truck isn't worth much so it's either sell it or get a new engine for cheap (less than $2000 ideally). Is this possible? A Jasper engine will cost me about $2500 and that plus labor for the swap would force me to sell my truck. Does anyone know of any reputable places where I could purchase an engine?
Not knowing where you live in the country makes it a little difficult. Shipping a motor could eat up a good portion of your budget. I've heard decent things in the past about Jasper, but for that cost you could probably rebuild your existing motor, possibly stroke to a 390? At least you'd have first hand knowledge of the quality of the rebuild.
I was / am in a similar boat. I guess a lot depends on what you do with your truck and what you need from a motor. I decided to build a 390 and managed to burn myself a few times. In retrospect, I've blown my budget and sort of wish I'd gone with one of my original thoughts and that was to swap in a 300-6. I had a '79 F100 with one and it was a great, trouble free motor. Nice thing is that you can get them and parts relatively cheap...and they are durable with lots of low end torque. I could get 17 MPG. Problem is that you'd need the perches to swap and a different, small block, tranny. Just some food for thought.
You could check with craigslist and before buying a FE engine make sure they start it and you can hear it run. That could be your cheapest option.
How in the world did you blow up a 360? That is very hard to do. Maybe run it out of oil for a couple hours.

My mechanic tells me that he believes that it had hydro locked in the past and slightly bent one of the connecting rods. This makes sense because when they went over it a few months ago they noted that the engine had a strange vibration. Just recently something gave and I had coolant in the cylinders, white smoke everywhere, etc. He believes that whatever repair had been done in the past blew out again.
