I remember reading a discussion of this very point on the engine forum not long ago and I believe the only way to tell was bu measuring the stroke of the motor by removing a spark plug and inserting a dowel or long rod and actually measuring the stroke.
I don't remember the actual length but if you will do a search, the correct information wsa oposted in the discussion.

I've played around with these engines in old Galaxies a lot. Don't go by the reverse image "352" that's on the block, it doesn't mean that is it a 352. It is on all of them up through the 428's ( I have 352's, 390's, and a 428 stored and they all have it.)
Bubba, has about the only way of checking short of tearing down and measuring the bore and stroke.
Also, if the motor came from a Mercury, the 410's were a 390's bore with 428's stroke. If the engine is a truck 360, I think it is a 352's bore with 390's stroke or visa versa on the bore and stroke.
On the pre-1965 engines, the motor mounts had a 2 bolt arrangement, whereas 1965 and up had a 4 bolt motor mount pattern. If it is a 2 bolt motor mount, it could be a 352 or 390. If it is a 2 bolt motor mount with cross-bolted mains, it is a 406 or 427 (worth its weight in gold). Many of the older 352's and 390's had the extra webbing around the mains and were good strong blocks. Some of them had enough material to go to the 428's 4.13 bore too.
When my son and I were restoring Galaxies back in the 80's, we would take the 352 webbed versions, and bore them to achieve a standard 390's bore (4.06"). This way we could use non-oversized parts and still be a true 390.
