My 2021 F350 Diesel had a recall a while back with the wiper blades stripping out I guess. Mine works fine so far. So, I had the boss call our local Ford dealer today to get the wiper blade problem fixed as they said parts for it are in. The lady comes back & says that the truck also has a software update which we never heard about. I told them I didn't need the software update, just the wiper blade recall corrected. She says that they are both tied together. Won't do one without the other.
Do you guys think that this is right? What a bunch of BS. It goes in Feb 20th. Is this the software update everyone was complaining about on their diesels a while back? Cuttin power & increasing Def usage? Well if it is I don't need that. I plan on updating this truck in the next year or so for a 7.3 gas. So I am thinking of canceling the appointment and gambling on the wiper recall. Which work fine right now. Because I don't believe that the truck needs a software update. The truck runs great & doesn't use much Def.
What do you guys think? Should I update software or not?
I wouldn't trip on the software update, but I don't believe what they told you about the recall and software update being tied together. Sounds like bs to me. Unless you live in a place that snows, I don't expect you will have any problems with the wipers if you do decide to forgo the dealer visit.
IDE buy a bottle of rain x and run that MFer till the wipers actually fail then bring it in. I’ve never had a “software update” done that actually made the truck run better. With dodge just getting caught with there pants down I’m sure Ford is doing a “update” to cover there ***. Which will In turn make your truck burn more DEF and get ****tier mileage. If you use rain x washer fluid and you get caught in a rainstorm it will head off good enough to get home.
Software update is emission related, so they will use whatever excuse to get you to do it, to keep EPA off their back.
Surprised you haven't gotten a letter or email or some other notification for the recall.
As to the wiper recall, sometimes they don't do anything other than a visual inspection.
If your wiper arms haven't come loose in 3 years of use, they likely never will fail.
Some states will even refuse to renew the vehicle license plates if you are not current on the emission upgrades. Hopefully you don’t live in one of those states.
If you are getting rid of it sometime in the near future, I'd just forget about it.
Concerning the windshield wiper recall... when I took mine in to my local dealership they "inspected them" and said that I didn't need anything replaced... I thought that was wrong as the recall didn't say anything about inspection, but that they would be replaced. Anyway, nothing has happened with them, and I haven't read of anything happening to others so I wouldn't worry about it. I actually replaced the wipers on mine a few weeks ago for the first time in 2 years.
The other recall is the 22E04 and it's a refresh for the PCM and the TCM. There are a few threads here... some have reported noticing a loss of power, somewhat sluggish change after the update while others reported no change. Some say that their perceived DEF usage has increased, while again, others state it's about the same. However, this is emissions related, and if you are in a state such as California, then yeah, by what other are reporting, you will need to have it done before you can renew the registration. However, in other states, it's not an issue. I actually received my recall for 22E04 back last July and have renewed my plates in MS in August and it wasn't even brought up. I am currently in FL and actually scheduled an appointment (via the dealerships website) for today at 3:30, however, when I got there at 3 I was informed it would be several hours. I decided not to wait for something that may not even happen. I also expressed (in a nice way) that I didn't even really want the update done and the lady at the service desk told me that I didn't have to if I didn't want to. I'm sure she isn't the official judge on this matter, however, they were definitely not forcing me to have it done and it didn't seem like a big deal. She gave me an extension to call if I changed my mind and wanted to reschedule... I still may, however, like others I don't believe that this is necessarily for the benefit of me or my truck as much as other, "higher powers..." And given what literally just went down with RAM, that does make it seem more likely it's somewhat of a detune... although, like I said, I got my recall letter last July, and it seems like I have read others post that they received then even before then, so this is something that Ford has been working on for quite a while now.
It's also interesting, but maybe unrelated, that the gasser guys are now getting letters too stating that their trucks were overrated and are getting checks for $100 because of this.

what might be those states? So I know not to move there
I received the wiper recall on my 2020 two years ago, took it to Ford, said had to order parts, never heard back. Received the emission recall last spring, said if I didn't get done wouldn't pass annual state inspection ,got it done, motor sounds a little different pulling, trans shifts smoother.
