Hello all
just bought a 1990 f250 with the 7.3L IDI non turbo this summer. Glow plugs didn’t work when I bought it, wouldn’t even come on. I replaced all 8 glow plugs, glow plug wires and relay with no change. After that I replaced the GP controller and it worked flawlessly, WTS light came on for about 10 seconds and fired right up, outside temp being 35-40. But ever since then they will only come on for about 2 seconds and it won’t start. Any tips would be appreciated, my knowledge and skill with electrical systems is not great.
Autolites are short lived, can swell on the tips and difficult to remove..
and or break off and fall into the prechamber, and some times on top of the piston,
then the head needs to be removed.
Probably 1000 threads about it.
motorcraft glow plugs only for our trucks. original part ZD-9, which has been replaced with zd-29 to combat cheap chinese counterfit plug being sold on evilbay.
rockauto has 10 ZD-9's left for $8.66 each and the zd29's for $10.12 https://www.rockauto.com/en/partsear...T&partnum=ZD-9
Thanks all for the help! I got motor craft ZD-29s and now three of the autolite won’t come out. They are all loose past the threads but the tips are stuck in. Any tips on getting them out or just soak em with PB blaster?
i soak with pb and connect a cordless drill to glow plug. than SLOWLY spin drill both directions while gently pulling up on drill. then push back down while spinning and spray, repeating process until plug comes out. PATIENCE IS THE KEY HERE. take your time. if you get mad stop and take a break.
Since I also recently acquired an old IDI, with no miles one it, should I get some of these for the future? Just in case they are unobtainium when mine wear out?
