Test drove an 02 TDEXC. on warmup at idle you could hear the turbo screaming out the tail pipe( jet engine whine) Idle perfect, gone after drive. Is this normal? Thanks Lilguy.
No, I don't think so I just picked up my 2002 XPSD Limited this week and have owned turbo "car" prior and it did have a conserderable WHINE to it. Actually I have been very pleased not to hear the wine cold or hot. Maybe just can't hear it over the PSD. It Doesn't sound right coming from the tail pipe though. I would say drive another one. By the way I only waited about 6 weeks for mine to be delivered with just what I wanted, but then I have never bought a vehicle "off the lot" except for an 86 XR4-TI the turbo the Wife had.
This was not the turbo whine heard from some units. This sounded like the wastegate was stuck open, and all the turbo sound was comming out the tailpipe.
I dont have my manual at work, but there is a blurb in the manual regarding there being a difference during warm up, I believe to help the engine warm up faster. Not the turbo tho, and actually doesn't sound like a whine, but does sound odd!
That noise is totally normal in colder weather. The engine produces backpressure on the exhaust to make that weird noise. If you think its loud on a stock truck, you should hear my truck, no muffler with 5 inch exhaust. But you have nothing to worry about. You will notice that as soon as you hit the brake or accelerator when this is occuring, it stops. The only reason why it does this is to get the combustion chambers up to temp. faster.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Apr-02 AT 10:44 PM (EST)] I have read that these PSD's leave the waste gate open during warmup,, so no boost until the motor reaches operating temp.
Perhaps that causing the noise ??
On second thought there was some info on that back pressure device in the literature that came with my 02 Exc. Wsa a video tape about the 4X4 and PSD features.. backpressure to quicken warmup and a fast idle speed during prolonged idling
