‘72 vs. ‘73 Spindles?

New to the site and starting a frame off restoration of a ‘72 F100. Is there a difference between the '72 spindles and the '73 spindles? I am doing a drum to disc conversion and have seen opinions that say the spindles are the same and opinions that say they are different. I do not want to spend the money on an all in one kit and I do not want to go rummaging through a junkyard looking for 50 year old parts (no disrespect to those that have gone either route). My plan was to purchase new O.E.M. parts for a '73 F-100 and bolt them up to my '72. It is my understanding that the kingpins are the same (just took mine out) and that I will need a new power booster, master cylinder, and proportioning valve. The answer to my spindle question has thrown me for a loop and an educated response would be greatly appreciated.

Think I found my answer; looks like I need to buy ‘73 spindles to make this work.

Presumably, for the brake parts attaching points?

Yes, slight brain freeze. Realized that unless I go with a Wilwood kit, then I must change the ‘72 spindle in order to go to disc brakes.

Here is all you need to know about "I" beams and spindles. Comparing I-beams and Spindles - FORDification.com
Good luck with OEM parts since all that stuff has been obsolete for decades. If you would put your location in your profile someone might be able to help, find that stuff.

Look at classic performance products for their aftermarket disc brake conversion spindles. _ Tony.

Thank you. I have seen their stuff and now just confirming that I do not need to change out any other parts to use their spindles.

Thanks again!

Here are a couple of older threads to read thru. The drum to disc has been done for decades now and it is well documented, but I highly recommend you use factory parts to do it. The big problem is finding the parts close enough to drive and get them. The best years to use are 78-79 that way if you mine the radius arms also you will have the ability to add a factory anti-sway bar. If you go with factory parts, be sure to get the brake line brackets from the donor. People overlook those and end up with no place to attach the brake hose. If you don't have power brakes now and you are going to add them, be sure to get the brake pedal also. Pay attention to any posts by NumberDummy he is the Ford parts guru. There are way more threads than these two if you do an advanced search.

Also get on this site and look for something close, keeping in mind that some lighter duty F250's used the same "I" beams and spindles. You can get new disc's and calipers at any parts store. Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

One thing to remember about those conversion kits is that they use a lot of GM parts when it comes to replacement/repair time so you will have to chase parts that way, like calipers/pads.

I do not intend this to be a hijack of thread . I feel it is related

I talked to CPP regarding their spindle replacements. They indicated to me that the spindles utilized Ford parts. _ Tony.

Thanks for the info LACzar. I was going to contact them next week. If this is the case, seems like the easiest option. Anyone have any experience utilizing their spindles?

What do you mean by bigger spindles? Some F250's used the same spindles as F150's. If you are looking for better brakes a booster is the simplest way to go. Well-maintained power drum brakes will stop just as good as disc brakes.
