My 1989 7.3idi has recently started knocking/tapping from the top of the engine it sounds like. It smokes white on start up but then goes away. The knock speed increases with the speed of the engine. It runs and idles fine. One thing I noticed how ever, is the driver side exhaust pipe is softer than the passenger side. The passenger side will blow your hand off. The driver side barely will. If i put my ear as close as i can to each exhaust pipe, the loud tap/knock is louder in the driver side as well. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
when I had an injector not sealed good it had a horrible knock, maybe loosen/tighten an injector at a time while at idle and see if it has any affect on the knock
If you loosen an injector and the knock goes away you know it's that cylinder causing the sound. You can then change the injector to a different cylinder to see if the sound follows the injector. If the sound stays at the original cylinder you know it's valve train/bottom end or IP related.
