Having a straight pipe on an 4 cycle engine can't hurt a thing, only help it. It will give you a few more hp since you won't have the restriction from the muffler and cat (if applicable) as well as keep your EGT's down, and you get cool points for the sound!

I don't know if I'd believe the person that told you it harms a gas engine. About the only thing that I heard that can be harmed is if a draft goes back up the exhaust pipe after the vehicle has been shut off and the cold air hitting the hot valves can make them warp. But the likelyhood of that happening is very slim. Shoot, you look at any high performance engine: nascar, drag cars, anything of the similar you won't see much exhaust on there, let alone a muffler.
When you straight pipe it, you'll be glad, I love the sound of it! You can really hear the turbo screamin!
