Straight pipes will help, especially if you're totally stock, and they sound soooo much better.
You will get more help by upgrading exhaust and downpipe so the engine breaths better.
Improved AIS helps even more.

I have to agree with the sound. I put a straight pipe on mine 2 months ago and just got to actually haul something of significant weight today. 14k and a straight pipe have such a sweet tone when combined. It's too good of a sound for words to describe.
