Auto Start/Stop Issue

My wife has a 2020 Expedition Limited with the auto start/stop feature. Twice in the last week, she will come up to a stop light and the engine will shut off normally. But when the light turns green and she lets off the brake, the truck doesn't restart and she gets a message saying something to the effect of "Put In Park, Press Start Button". What is going on that makes it not want to restart in the auto start/stop mode?

You are the first to post that particular problem.

The usual issue is AS/S just stops working because the battery is undercharged. The battery management systems in these trucks can't do catch up like older systems, so the battery never gets fully charged. Add poor battery condition and the next thing is no start at all.

You should take it to Ford or someone with a good code reader and see if any codes pop up.

I've got a code reader, I'll hook it up and see if it says anything. I also thought about a battery issue. It showed good voltage but as far as I know it's the original battery (we bought the truck with 10,000 miles on it). If it's not throwing codes, maybe the battery should be swapped. Thanks for the response.

Hi there. Feel free to send us a DM with your vehicle's VIN and mileage. We'd be happy to look into this for you.

Update?

Any update to this? Today my wife’s truck did this exact same thing! 2021 Expedition Limited, 38,000 miles purchased brand new. Current temp outside is 27 degrees, she came to a stop it turned off and then said to put in park to restart.

I replaced the battery about a month ago. It hasn't happened since. It was intermittent so I can't guarantee that fixed it, but so far so good.

Sounds like the older ones start doing this instead of just disabling the AS/S system. Considering everyone who has asked hasn't come back and said they still have the issue, I would say yes, replace the battery. Most batteries are only good for 2-3 years anyway, and you've got 4-5 on yours if it's original.

I have found several models with corrosion on the hood up/open switch at the connector. With corrosion the switch can tell the system the hood is up and it will not restart the vehicle. Also found this to be the case with a Dodge Durango... so I always check this circuit when I have an issue with stop-start function.
