The last time I played “good samaritan” there were a couple young fellows, well dressed, came walking up to my house. They explained they had their rig stuck in a little sand wash about 100 yards south of my house. OK, I get the Jeep (It had a 12,000 lb winch on it ) and go give them a tug. They started carrying on about “How can we ever thank you enough?” Etc. Blah, blah, blah. I simple stated “Try cash” …..they acted like I insulted them. If it ever happens again, I will just give them the number of the tow company.
But I am not totally bad. One time a few years ago I was up in what is known as the Arizona Strip (The most remote, sparsely populated area in lower 48) exploring and sight seeing. About 10 PM on a Sunday evening, about 70 or 80 miles from St George Utah, here sits a guy with a flat tire on a late model Chevy car and no spare. (I was camped about mid way between him and town ) I stopped, had a chat with him, gave him all the water I had and told him under NO CIRCUMSTANCES to leave his vehicle. There was a county road crew working back in there, and they would be coming to work Monday morning and they would definitely stop and give assistance. As long as he stayed with his car he was in no danger. Sure enough, he listened and the county crew helped him out!
I've heard of good samaritans being both punished and rewarded for their deeds. I don't believe either is the correct reason to do or not to do when another needs help.

I'm of the opinion that I'd rather try to help someone and regret it than drive off and regret it. Have refused two people though, both came screaming past me driving way too fast for what the conditions allowed and wound up with their trucks in a snow bank, still felt bad about it but also kinda dont care.

I understand that... And just to be clear. I'm in no way saying I always help when I can. I should, and I have many times, but I've certainly failed to help others when it was warranted.
