My recent plow truck purchase 2001 F-350 with the v10, not equipped with hydro boost . bought it with the seller saying it needed a power steering pump. Put new pump and pressure line on it. Same symptom of straining at first start but then having power steering until the straining stops. So a new box was installed, and a new return line. Same issue, I am using Mercon V for fluid. Also. It does turn freely when the front is jacked up. Looking for some input, just very strange to me that both boxes and both pumps have the same symptoms.
The only symptom you mention is "straining at first start but then having power steering until the straining stops". So it comes and goes? Describing the issue might help better diagnose.
How are the ball joints? I've heard of people having steering issues if they are failing/seized. One thing that is sometimes overlooked is the belt tensioner failing and the PS pump pulley slipping.

Yes, it comes then goes after about 5 minutes of the engine running then doesn’t ever come back unless I turn it off and let the truck sit a few hours, and when the truck is on jack stands, it turns wonderfully when the engine is not running, so I don’t suspect an issue with ball joints. I do not hear a squeal or anything indicating a slipping of the belt, but is there a way I can tell if the tensioner isn’t functioning properly?
For the tensioner, I mention it because when I bought my truck from my buddy, he actually had just replaced it to fix the power steering issue. I would imagine you can take a 3/8 drive ratchet or breaker bar and turn the tensioner and see if its seized or loose. Not sure how else really. Obviously you bled the system well after replacing the components, no air at all in the fluid?
