I just blew the power steering pump on my 00 F250. Looks pretty simple and straight forward looking at it. The question is, how much power steering fluid do I need after putting the new one on? And i recall doing a power steering flush a while back, and I had to use a transmission fluid or something?
It's allways a good idea to flush the p/s system, especially with the hydroboost. you can use atf, mercon or the like, but I allways prefer to use power steering fluid, its clear, has the right additives and you should only need a couple quarts to get it done, maybe an extra one with the cooler.
Mercon is what I used. Now we you say with the hydro boost? How do I know if I have that one. When I called the parts store they asked which one I had, and by the description of only seeing one line off of it, it wasn't the hydro.
Yea it was the high pressure hose that popped out, not the steering pump itself. It was in the middle of the work day, didn't have time to investigate it and knew it was something with the pump and that's it. Being the business truck, I came home pulled out the 08 to take the place and finish working. While out picked up the pump, all hoses, and fluid because I knew I needed it for work tomorrow.
Covered all bases, and having 250k on it, new stuff never hurts.
hey Chris… this mention of a power steering pulley removal/reinstallation tool… is there any significant difference between that and a standard pulley puller? i'm in a similar boat to pin8246. just curious to know.
thanks in advance for the info. cheers!

Yes. The power steering puller is sized to hook onto the end of the power steering pulley. It's also made to press the pulley back on. Check google for a picture so you see the difference.

I have always read that mercon or similar is required for the hydroboost system. Power steering fluid is a big no go.
if your power steering pump is not absolutely puking fluid i would suggest doing the fluid flush before swapping the pumps, the fluid flush is pretty easy, you remove one line off the hydrobooster and install a clear line into a drain pain from it, then add fluid as it pumps it out, then you do the same thing but unplug the bottom return line from the steering box and bleed that(have to make sure to cap the return line at the resevoir)(there is a write up on it somewhere on here) but this will ensure you have clean fluid for when you change out the pump.
other than that the pump is an hour job at max unless you have never worked on a car before, then maybe 2
