My 2002 F-250 has an issue with the turn signal. 5 years ago I replaced my original with a Ford OEM "multi function" switch. Now, I get about 20 seconds of "blinker" and then it stays solid light, in cab on outside. Lights work so it's not a blown bulb. It does it for both right and left directionals. Ford has stopped making this part for my year. Now according to the dealer, only aftermarket (ugh) available.. However could it be the relay in the engine bay or would it be the multi function switch itself?
Thoughts.....
Going back to this issue. Got a new flasher relay,(mine is in the engine bay) and the problem is still there. After blinking for 20-30 is goes to a solid light. Even the emergency flashers will do the same. I am now thinking its the Multifunction switch on the steering column. I went to O'Reilly's and trouble-shot it with the store manager. It can only be one of these parts........
I don't see how it's possible for the turn signal switch to be the issue. Also the flashers and turn signals are separate from one another for the most part.
the switch is exactly that, just a trigger to tell the flasher to turn on. It has no other function. The relays control the operation and power the bulbs
what kind of bulbs are you using? are they incandescent or did you switch to LED?
signals and flashers also have their own relays. I'm pretty sure flashers on all our trucks is behind the dash. i would replace it
Update: so after 21.5 yrs, I never had to change the flasher relay that is "behind" the dash, under the radio. I found it thanks to you guys. Manual doesn't even list it's location. It's a bitch to get it out from under the dash. I am waiting for Crutchfield to send me those stereo removal tools as I just put a new one in last year. I can see the flasher relay, it's blue in color. I'll let you know if that was the culprit....
FYI, you do not need to pull the stereo. There are several ways to get to the relay.
1. remove floor vent which blocks access
2. pull ashtray/ bag hanger on lower portion of dash.
3. unlatch the dash bezel the stereo is mounted to which will give you just enough access to remove the lower portion of the dash.
4. don't need to remove anything and you can still reach it similar to example 1...depending on your size and flexibility.
I just watched several videos on this yesterday when looking for the relay part number of another member on one of the forums. It's not as hard as you think to access; although the dumbest place Ford could have located these relays.
