I just lost my power steering this afternoon, have not had time to check out much, but belts still there, and power steering pump has fluid. Brake pedal has been feeling kinda wierd lately as well any ideas? Thanks
If you take the line off the hydro boost like you're doing the power steering flush, do you get fluid flowing out of there? If you drive or turn the wheels at idle does the steering reservoir cap pop off?
I did not take the line off, will try that tomorrow. The cap did not blow off or anything when I turned the wheel, but the wheel takes 3 men to turn lol! The PS Pump used to whine if that helps any. Thanks
The whine is usually the pressure-relief valve doing its job, but I'll bet it's now stuck open with some chunk of crud in it. This leaves you with the pump having all its pressure bypassed back to itself.
No pressure equals no "power" in either steering or brakes.
Though you might be able to fix it, the easiest thing is to get a new pump.
What would the cap popping off indicate? Just looking to add to the database between my ears...
Power steering pump not working. You'll notice that if the truck is turned off and you turn the steering wheel that the cap will pop off due to the pressure built up in the pump.
My truck is hard to turn at idle too, most of the time.
Should I do a flush also?
Who sell the best power steering pump?
Power steering is one of the most neglected fluids in cars and trucks. If you have never done it, it's a good idea. Many here have had excellent results useing synthetic ATF. Remember our trucks require ATF and not power steering fluid.
The important thing is the chemical compatibility of the fluid with the compounds in the seals used in the system.
When power steering was first introduced, a hydraulic fluid of some sort was needed. All that was commonly used in the automotive business at the time with close to optimum specifications was transmission fluid.
"Power steering fluid" wasn't even around until a few years ago when Japanese and European manufacturers thought they could "optimize" it, and came out with their own specifications.
So what I think is asinine is using anything BUT ATF in power steering systems.
I just flushed mine and made a huge difference. The fluid coming out was nasty brown color. My pump was whining occasionally, but the last couple of days it was whining all the time.
No more wine and turns with easy, even sitting still.

Hey guys, I realize this is an old thread but I am having this issue with my 2000. Today the truck lost all power steering because it pushed enough fluid out the top of the reservoir until it emptied itself. The power steering had been whining since I bought the truck and the brake pedal is really spongy. Is this a bad pump and where do I get a replacement? Is this something I can tackle by myself? I know I will need a pulley puller set, that's not a problem.
