Hello.
I have a 1990 f150 lariat with a 302.
I also have a 3 g alternator on my bench but was told you need the bracket which I saw today in the junk yard on a 1995 f150 302
i undid 3 bolts and it ( along with the attached smog pump) were rocking back and forth. But I could not see what was holding it I.
… but was told you need the bracket… But I could not see what was holding it I.
That is not correct. There are 3G alternators with two bolt mounting ears. Look up the 3G swap article on garysgaragemahal.com to see the list of models that will bolt to your existing bracket. If you go back for the newer three bolt mount, I think you will also need the power steering bracket because the belt routing and tensioner is different than what you have. I could be wrong about needing the other bracket. I read about that stuff 3-4 years ago. I’m pretty sure there is another bracket/brace that goes from the back of the air pump to the block.
Looks to me you removed one of the bolts holding the air pump. There should still be one more holding the bracket on. Probably hiding behind the tensioner..

ok thanks for that , I didn’t realize that there is a 3 g alternator that has the same mounting holes/ position as mine.
you have to grind your bracket a bit…
that info is gold, especially for the uninitiated like my self..
thank you
Ok so at some point a grabbed the wrong alternator and that what led me in the direction of the bracket.
even though I now know that.
imthink I should post a picture of both here just for reference to any other forum members that come searching.
