Picked up a used m5r2 and it has some vertical play in neutral, but almost entirely goes away when I ran it through the gears. Very little end play aswell. Would you run it? Don't have the money for a complete rebuild with new shaft.
Vertical play in neutral?
What shaft?
The input shaft?
You had better at least pull the cover and inspect the synchros and blocking rings
Have it in neutral when you do that
The input bearing will have play when not plugged into the pilot bearing in the crankshaft
Yes the input shaft, output shaft solid. Pulled top cover; gears and synchros looks great, 1/2 shift fork needs replaced. Removed the front cover? The cover behind the slave, that holds the bearing race. After I rebolted that back down, input shaft has nearly no play at all. Don't really want to pull the input shaft to replace bearing, but I guess I would if I need to.
Wonderful
Just replace the worn shift fork if that is all that wrong presently
The input bearing is expensive and lasts damn near forever if the trans has adequate oil IMO
I clearly stated unknown I would not install, never did I say I would not install a good, known used. Wrecks exist, rotted out trucks exist, etc
$2000 for a reman M5OD? Yah, probably with fresh hydraulics and a clutch kit. If one depended upon the vehicle for their life (work, education, whatever) a fresh is smarter anyway.
Buying a 30+ year old truck and not planning for at least a reman trans or major engine work is a fool's errand at best.
