I bought my 82 f250 with a 351 without a alt bracket. In the pic. you can see how it was installed. I've searched for my answer but really can't find what i need.
You are missing a big ugly cast aluminum bracket that held the alternator and the smog pump. You can hardly even see the alternator once the bracket is in place. The alternator mounts below, then the smog pump on top.
Hey Skyline,
I might have that alternator bracket. I rebuilt a 351W and replaced all the accessories with a March Performance Serpentine Kit, so I ddin't need that bracket. It should be in the spare parts pile. Might take a few days to find it, as work tends to keep me pretty busy during the week.
When Dave says "ugly" he really meant UGLY! Without the smog pump there's this piece raising its arms to the sky crying "I'm missing something!!!" I'm planning to machine the raised arms off, or fabricate something simple to take its place.
Chris - Isn't it hanging down below the alternator in the first picture?
Skyline - It looks like your belts are lined up correctly, but it is hard to tell from the pictures. Are they? If they are and you have the bottom bracket Chris is referring to then why change?
You are right. The pullies do not line up and every time you go the belt really squeals. Also the 1 bolt at the top IMO is not enough to hold the alt. tight without moving. Worried about either bending or snapping the bolt. Even though the double bracket looks pretty ugly it will keep the alt. where it should be and machining of the extra from it looks like a good idea too!
Skyline - If Ron doesn't find his bracket shoot me a PM as I have a couple. I've pulled parts off of several trucks and have found that it takes a LOT of time. So, I'm selling them.

Gary, you are so paradoxically funny. (Not intended as an insult or anything, just jabbin' ya.)
I mean, here you are, a 60-some-odd yo retired guy with a large house and beautiful shop out in Podunk, Oklahoma, driving a Mercedes Benz and who knows what other cars, apparently you've got money growing out of your ears.
Yet, here you are, selling obscure parts to 30 yo rusty pickup trucks, just seems counter-intuitive to me....
As of June I'll be on Medicare and am already on Social Security, so you do the math on my age. But, I am old.
As for vehicles, the 12 year old Mercedes had too many problems so it's been replaced by a Murano. We decided that one 10 year old vehicle, the wife's Subie, awa the two 82 and two 81 pickups, and the '69 Bee, was enough for maintenance/restoration in one fleet. But, the pickups will get thinned out soon, so the fleet will get smaller.
Having said all that, I'm planning to get out of the parting-out "business". In fact, I didn't plan to get into business. Started by buying one truck for $700 to get the bed for Dad's truck and stripped it of the other parts. Found another in a field a guy at church had and wanted rid of, so for $225 brought it home and stripped it. Along the way I found guys on Clist with trucks they were parting out so got selective parts for a good price. But, that was taking sooooo much time that it was no longer a hobby, and I had over $1K invested and that was growing quickly, so decided I'd better divest.

With that setup, your right about your problems. But they are easily solved by adding a spacer at location #2, and going to Lowe's or Tractor Supply and getting a piece of flat metal, putting a bend in the middle, and drilling holes on each end to make a piece like #1, that would support the bolt the alt swings on.
I do have the bracket, but realized as I was pulling it out, that it was for a serpentine setup with EFI, so it won't fit. DOH!! I apologize, I completely spaced on that until I had the bracket in my hand and it struck me, they were V-belts in the pictures. Fortunately, it looks like Gary should be able to help you out. Good Luck.
