Coolant level drops when running
I was performing several needed repairs at the same time to catch up so did a quick and dirty coolant change with a new Dorman unit.
I am watching the level and notice it goes down when the engine is hot by about 2 inches and returns to the fill line when the engine cools off.
I have never seen this happen on any vehicle. I have usually see the level go up when it gets hot and back to normal when it cools off.
I simply followed a youtube video or two when replacing the bottle. I saw no reference to bleeding the cooling system.
The vehicle has seen a thousand highway miles since then and the behavior is the same.
One thing I found a little unusual was when capturing the old coolant and returning it to the overflow the level was in the same position as it was before the bottle replacement. I was somewhat messy when reusing the old coolant and filled a fair amount when readding it fully expecting to add a bit of distilled water. Maybe the Dorman bottle is a bit smaller?
Is this normal? A previous post here seems to say it is.
Thanks.
