Question low engine coolant

I just bought a 1998 F150 with a 4.6 liter v8 with 42000 kms. I noticed the coolant was low so I added almost two gallons of coolant.

Is this normal?

Where did this stuff go?

When I don't go far there is a bit of white goop under the oil filler cap but nothing unusual considering I only drive probaably 7 miles to work' and the temperature has been constantly between 0 and -15 C.

There is also nothing on the dipstick or the pcv valvle.

It's not normal for that amount of coolant to disappear. I don't think I've ever had to add coolant to my truck other than when I was changing the fluid. I'd keep an eye on it.

That isnt normal at all. You have a leak somewhere....

Also, you should not be adding pure coolant.....there should also be some water in there as well (deionized water is best) and the amount is dependent on the climate where you live.

Monitor coolant level every day for about a week. Check it first thing in the morning when the engine and coolant are cold in order to discount changes in level caused by thermal expansion.
