I have a 1986 Ford F-250 Automatic transmission, Earlier today as i was driving around all the gears worked just fine. After letting it sit for a few hours I go back out and every single gear is drive now with the occasional neutral if i'm lucky. The trans fluid is not burnt and does not have coolant in it. I messed with linkage and nothing appears to be out of place. Any help is appreciated.
You did not say what auto transmission you have C6 or AOD?
Also did not say what the level was if low it may not work right.
How many miles on the trans total and between the last service?
Dave ----

my apologies. It is a C6 transmission, transmission fluid was perfect level no burnt smell and not dark. Unsure mileage between last change as I just bought this truck last week
Maybe someone that knows auto trans better will come by with something to check / do as it looks like you covered all the bases.
I would hate to say do a service, fluid & filter change, and see if that works and not have it work after all that money & time spent.

Is the truck a 4x4?
If so transfer case in high range?
Could also try low range too and you dont have to lock the front hubs to test.
If the case is chain drive and the chain went bad I would think you would hear really bad noise!
Dave ----
Are there any vacuum hoses to the tranny that maybe cracked and leaking ?
I cant remember if the C6 has a vacuum line to it or if it uses a kick down rod, I was to say rod to the carb.
Either way if either was disconnected it would still move forward and back it just may not shift at the right speed / RPM.
As far as I know it is only the AOD that if the cable is not hooked up right may not move as it controls the pressure in the trans.
Dave ----
No hoses are leaking it has a kickback rod and the rod is still in place, yes it is a 4x4 but we have moved it through all the gears and still nothing but forward. I will try to put new fluid in to see if that works maybe he did put the wrong fluid in but the truck ran and driven perfectly up until this point.
