I recently bought this truck and got it running. I needed to add 3-4 qts of transmission fluid (type F) to bring it up to where it needs to be, which might be worrisome. It had been sitting for about 10 years previously.
The transmission shifts smooth and goes into reverse fine etc. But while accelerating the trans will sometimes feel like it slips into neutral and motor will rev up. I take my foot off the gas and then right back down, it accelerates again like nothing happened. There is no big "grabbing" or "clunking" feeling when this happens, though I can hear something free-spinning down there. If I baby the throttle it will shift through all gears and wont slip, but driving normal it does. Anyone else experience anything like this before?
The fluid looks and smells ok, not burnt, for what its worth.
This has happened while in drive "D" and while having "2" gear selected. Any help or suggestion that I can try out before I take it somewhere?
Although this is rare I have seen filters get clogged up which causes the fluid not to go where its needed so there is no pressure to hold the clutch plates together and the trans acts like its in neutral. Id drop the pan first and put in a new filter, this is cheap and you can get a good idea of internal conditions by looking at whats in the pan.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will try this out. Anything I can look at or try thats not pricey is worth doing before spending lots of money on a new trans, lots of times its something simple right? But unfortunately not all the time.
If a filter is clogged that means the transmission is toast.
Whatever clogged the filter had to come from somewhere. That somewhere being clutches or band.
So replacing a clogged filter won't do diddly squat except buying a few minutes.
That's always a good possibility and why i said to check whats in the bottom of the pan. I had a TH 400 last for two years after i changed filter before i sold it. It depends alot on what the po did or didn't do but it never hurts to drop the pan before doing serious work just so you know whats in store
Make sure the breather is clear. Mud wasps live building nests there.
If it is clogged the fluid will show a higher reading yet still be low.
This is probably a dumb question, but where is the breather? I looked pretty good and couldn't see anything that might be a breather. I see 2 lines that run to the the cooler, 1 line thats for the vacuum and the linkage(shifter/kick-down) on the other side of the trans.

Update: I know its been awhile and I haven't had much time to get this figured out yet. But I did try an experiment yesterday that has me scratching my head.
I live on a dirt road so I decided to see if I could get the truck to "slip into neutral" while the transfer case is in the "locked" position like it has been in the unlocked position on the street.
I tested it 4 times , 2 locked and 2 unlocked. Drove the same distance and same mph. Both times while unlocked, the truck was in third gear it slipped into neutral, took my foot off the gas and then it "hooked back up", like it was doing on the street. When I put the transfer case in the Hi Locked position I wasn't able to get it to slip into neutral. Granted I wasn't able to drive long distance or anything but I do think thats kinda weird.
Any thought or ideas of why it would act like this?
