Sidewall blew out on my 2008 sport trac. The tires are 265/65/R18 the spare is a 235/65/R18. I drove it back home about 2 blocks and put the spare on.
Now there is a loud clunking noise and surging when I drove it around the block. Could I have damaged the axle or is it the smaller spare tire?
Yes! It could be either an axle issue or the difference in overall diameter, from side to side. You have about 1.5 inches of height difference in the two tire sizes. This COULD cause issues with your axle. Especially when going around corners. Does the sound appear, at all, while driving straight? A posi-trac, type axle would/should be less effected than a straight axle. In my opinion, this is more likely the issue than your having damaged anything with the blowout.
The spare is a 17" rim. The smaller tire was activating the antiskid causing it to buck. The tire guy said next time disable the antiskid and it will stop jerking and bucking. I am going to find a 18" rim and mount one of the old tires to it and tuck it back under the truck. I guess if it had the factory recommended 235/65/R18 tires it would not have been an issue. But the 265/65/R18 tires fill the wheel wells out and look better.
OH WELL its all good now.
